Quercetin (from the Latin quercus, meaning oak) is a flavonol from the large polyphenol family of flavonoids. It occurs as a secondary plant compound in a wide range of fruits and vegetables – particularly high natural concentrations are found in onions, capers, apples, broccoli and grapes. The quercetin used in Optiolex Quercetin 500 is extracted from the flower buds of Sophora japonica (Japanese pagoda tree), a plant native to East Asia and one of the richest natural botanical sources of quercetin available.

From a chemical perspective, quercetin has a flavone backbone (2-phenylchromen-4-one) with several phenolic hydroxyl groups. It is precisely this structure that is responsible for the antioxidant chemical properties of the molecule: quercetin can act as an electron donor and belongs to the class of compounds that scavenge free radicals in analytical in-vitro assays. Together with other polyphenols such as resveratrol and rutin, quercetin is one of the most extensively studied plant flavonols in nutritional biochemistry.
