When cells stop tidying up the way they used to
Spermidine from concentrated wheat germ powder, combined with Vitamin C — as a vegan capsule from the Austrian brand Optiolex.
Something subtle starts shifting in the body's metabolism from the early thirties onwards. The body's own production of spermidine — a polyamine found in every cell — gradually declines. Anyone paying attention notices that recovery takes a little longer than it did in their mid-twenties.
Spermidine is produced by the body itself and is also taken in through food. Wheat germ is one of the most concentrated dietary sources — followed by soybeans, mushrooms and aged cheese. The Optiolex capsule provides 2.4 mg of spermidine per daily dose from 480 mg of concentrated wheat germ powder, the nutrient-dense part of the grain. Vitamin C as calcium-L-ascorbate rounds off the formulation with two authorised functions for immune system and cell protection.
Spermidine has been the subject of ageing research for more than a decade. Publications in Nature describe its role in autophagy — the cellular recycling process. The scientific discussion is ongoing, and a conclusive evaluation in humans is still pending. Optiolex is a brand based in Styria, Austria.
Take 1 capsule twice daily, unchewed, with sufficient water.

Why wheat germ in particular?
The germ of the wheat kernel concentrates the nutrients the young plant needs to grow. Polyamines such as spermidine are among them — wheat germ contains around 24 mg per 100 g, making it one of the richest natural sources. In industrial flour production the germ is usually removed because its high oil content shortens shelf life. That is why most people today eat considerably less spermidine than they did a century ago.
What does spermidine have to do with autophagy?
Autophagy is the cellular recycling process — literally "self-eating". Damaged proteins and cellular components are collected, broken down and reused. Spermidine is being intensively studied in connection with this process. Current research suggests that autophagy slows with age — one reason why spermidine receives so much attention in ageing research.

💬 Frequently asked questions
-
How many capsules do I take per day?+One capsule twice daily with sufficient water. One jar contains 60 capsules and therefore lasts 30 days — around one month.
-
Are the capsules vegan?+Yes. The capsule shell is made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant-based material. No animal ingredients are used.
-
Does the product contain gluten?+Yes. Wheat germ powder naturally contains wheat and therefore gluten. Anyone who needs to avoid gluten should not use this product.
-
How much spermidine is in it?+2.4 mg of spermidine per daily dose (2 capsules), obtained from 480 mg of concentrated wheat germ powder. A comparable amount would require considerably larger portions of whole-grain foods or aged cheese.
-
What are polyamines — and why spermidine in particular?+Polyamines are organic compounds present in every body cell. The group includes spermidine, spermine, putrescine and cadaverine. Spermidine was first isolated from human semen — hence the name. The compound is found in almost all foods in varying amounts, with particularly high concentrations in wheat germ.
-
Which products go well with this one?+If you want to extend the idea of cellular care, Optiolex offers two complementary picks: OPC Grape Seed Extract as a plant-based antioxidant, and Silicon for connective tissue, skin, hair and nails.
