Iron

Iron deficiency is one of the most common deficiency diseases in humans worldwide. It is believed that around two billion people worldwide suffer from an iron deficiency. Iron is a vital trace element for all living cells. The normal body inventory of iron is 3 to 5g. Too much or too little of it endangers our lives. It is always about a healthy balance of iron in our body. Only about 10% iron is absorbed from the daily diet. Iron from animal sources such as meat is present in higher concentrations and can also be better utilized than plant-based iron. Vegans in particular should therefore ensure that they have an adequate supply of iron. A storage of reserve iron is ensured by the ferritin in some organs. The transport of iron in the blood takes place by means of a transport protein called transferrin, which should be determined annually in the preventive medical check-up. Iron is particularly important for the oxygen supply to the cells and stimulates the formation of red blood cells, and therefore plays an important role in the functioning of the heart, immune system, muscles, brain function and good performance. Iron deficiency often occurs after heavy blood loss (e.g. after blood donation, surgery, menstruation). Poor diet or illnesses can also be causes of iron deficiency. The body cannot form iron itself and is therefore dependent on the supply from food. Vitamin C promotes the absorption of iron and tannins in coffee, tea or red wine inhibit iron absorption.

According to Regulation (EU) No. 432/2012, some health claims for iron are permitted. Here are some examples:

"Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin."
"Iron supports normal oxygen transport in the body."
"Iron helps reduce tiredness and fatigue."
"Iron plays a role in the cell division process."
"Iron contributes to normal cognitive function."
"Iron supports the immune system."

These health claims point to the important role of iron in the body. Iron is essential for the formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, which allows oxygen to be transported around the body. It also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and supports normal cognitive function. In addition, iron plays a role in the cell division process and contributes to the functioning of the immune system.
