Greens that wait in the cupboard: young barley leaves, ready by the teaspoon
This organic barley grass powder from Kräuterhaus Sanct Bernhard is made from nothing but the young leaves of the barley plant. It is high in fibre, purely plant-based and stirs straight into water, juice or food.
You buy a big bag of spinach on Sunday with good intentions. By Thursday half of it has gone limp, and the green smoothie never quite happened. That is simply how a full working week tends to go.
A tin of powder sidesteps the problem because nothing wilts. Stir a teaspoon into a glass of water, add it to a juice or mix it into a meal. As there is only barley grass inside, you know exactly what you are getting, and you can combine it with whatever else you like.
It comes from Kräuterhaus Sanct Bernhard in Bad Ditzenbach, a company that has been making natural products and cosmetics since 1903. The same range also includes psyllium husk powder and organic black cumin oil.
2–3 times a day, 1 teaspoon of organic barley grass powder dissolved in approx. 200 ml of water or stirred into food.

💬 Frequently asked questions
-
Is barley grass the same as barley?+Same plant, different stage. Barley grass is the young green barley before it produces grain, and this powder is made from those young leaves rather than from the grain itself.
-
Do I have to drink it with water?+Not at all. A teaspoon dissolves in around 200 ml of water, but it works just as well in a glass of juice or stirred into a meal. Pick whichever fits your day.
-
What makes it "high in fibre"?+In the EU a food may be called high in fibre if it contains at least 6 g of fibre per 100 g. This powder has 42 g per 100 g, so fibre makes up almost half of it.
-
How is it different from a greens blend?+Greens blends usually mix several grasses, algae and vegetables, sometimes with added flavouring. This is a single organic plant powder, so you can use it on its own or build your own mix around it.
-
What does DE-ÖKO-001 mean?+Every organic food in the EU carries the code of the body that inspects it. "DE" is the country where that body is approved, "ÖKO" stands for organic production and "001" is its number. The code tells you who checks the organic status, not where the barley was grown. The line below it does: "EU agriculture" means the barley was grown in the EU.
