Description

Oxidative stress doesn't ask whether today suits you

An algae extract, gently won with CO₂, bedded in extra virgin olive oil and stabilised with natural vitamin E. 300 softgel capsules, one a day.

🌿
Astaxanthin from the blood-rain alga
Put Haematococcus pluvialis under stress and it turns deep red. That red carotenoid is what the extract is made of – grown, not built in a lab.
🛡️
Cell protection from natural vitamin E
Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It comes as D-alpha-tocopherol, the natural form – and it guards the astaxanthin inside the capsule as well.
💎
Gently extracted with supercritical CO₂
Instead of chemical solvents, the maker works with compressed carbon dioxide. It draws the pigment out of the cell wall and then evaporates without residue.
💊
Softgel with extra virgin olive oil
Astaxanthin is fat-soluble. The olive oil brings the carrier along, and the thick-walled softgel shell keeps light and oxygen out.

A long day outdoors, thirty kilometres on the bike, then four hours in front of a screen – the body works through a fair amount on a day like that. Free radicals form during every one of those processes, quite normally and unavoidably. Each cell makes its own protective compounds against them. That balance simply doesn't hold equally well at every stage of life.

Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoids, like beta-carotene or lutein. Its molecule has one peculiarity though: a water-friendly group sits at each end, with a long fat-friendly chain in between. So it spans the cell membrane rather than floating in the fatty core. That architecture is why labs around the world keep coming back to the red pigment.

Behind the product stands Ivarsson's Produkte fürs Leben in Schriesheim, Germany – a supplier that was already selling astaxanthin when barely anyone could pronounce the name. The algal pigment has been authorised as a food ingredient in the EU since 2007 and has been studied for more than two decades. Compare the market today and you will find dozens of suppliers. The question is always the same: where does the raw material come from, and how was it released from the alga?

What sets natural astaxanthin apart from the synthetic kind?

Chemically both carry the same name, spatially they are different molecules. The alga builds almost entirely one single mirror-image variant, and it also links the carotenoid to fatty acids to form esters. Synthetic astaxanthin, by contrast, is a mixture of several forms and comes unesterified. Only the algal variant goes into these capsules – you can see it in the deep red of the oil.

How should 4 mg a day be judged?

Astaxanthin from this alga has been assessed as a novel food in the EU and appears on the Union list. In 2020 the European Food Safety Authority derived an acceptable daily intake of 0.2 mg per kilogram of body weight. For someone weighing 60 kilograms that works out at 12 mg per day. One capsule, at 4 mg, sits well below that.

⚠️ Mandatory information: Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

💬 Frequently asked questions

  • How long does one jar last?+
At one capsule a day the jar lasts 300 days – roughly ten months. It is the largest pack available and noticeably cheaper per day than the smaller jars.
  • Is VitalAstin vegan or vegetarian?+
No. The capsule shell is made from bovine gelatine. The contents themselves are entirely plant-based – algae extract, olive oil and vitamin E. If you need an animal-free option, the astaxanthin lozenges below are one.
  • Does it contain gluten, lactose or soy?+
According to the manufacturer, VitalAstin is free from gluten, lactose and other known allergens. It contains no colourings or flavourings, no magnesium stearate and no preservatives. The product is not irradiated and is made without genetic engineering.
  • Do I need to take it with a meal?+
One capsule a day with liquid is what's specified – a fixed time of day is not part of it. Fat-soluble carotenoids are often paired with a meal, but the extra virgin olive oil inside the capsule already brings the fat along.
  • Can I open or split the capsule?+
Better not. The thick-walled softgel shell keeps light and airborne oxygen away from the contents. Open it and that protection is gone. The deep red oil also stains reliably whatever it touches.
  • Capsule or lozenge – what's the difference?+
Both deliver 4 mg of natural astaxanthin from the same alga. The capsule builds on olive oil and vitamin E; the lozenge is vegan, sugar-free, combined with green tea extract and vitamin B12, and needs no water.
