Question about item
What comes out of your tap, and how much of it do you actually want in your glass?
The Sanuslife ECAIA carafe runs tap water through activated carbon and mineral ceramics. No plug, no plumbing. Two cartridges come in the box, enough for about 600 litres or four months.
Tap water in Austria is tested and safe. Between the waterworks and your kitchen, though, it travels through pipes that may be older than the house's owner, and it picks up whatever the local network carries: a whiff of chlorine, nitrate from farmland, traces of metals from old fittings. Bottled water avoids some of that, at the cost of crates, plastic and a boot full of empties.
The carafe works as a gravity filter. Pour tap water into the upper reservoir and it trickles through the cartridge into the jug below. Activated carbon granules bind chlorine, organic compounds and heavy metals along the way. The ceramics in the same cartridge release minerals and shift the water into the alkaline range, and they leave the redox value in the minus range too: Sanuslife measures −50 to −200 mV, where tap water usually sits at +150 to +300 mV. The base carries an additional harmonising unit that Sanuslife calls the energizing plate.
The filter technology comes from Sanuslife International in Bolzano, South Tyrol. The same carbon-and-ceramic principle sits inside the company's larger ECAIA ionisers; the carafe is the compact, plug-free member of that range. The manufacturer's full test results are in the product data sheet (PDF, German).
Remove the blue seal from the underside of the cartridge and prepare it as described in the enclosed manual before fitting. Fill the upper reservoir with tap water; it runs through the cartridge into the carafe. Replace the cartridge after 300 litres, or after 60 days at the latest. To reset the timer, hold the START button until the display flashes four times; it then counts down from 60 again.

Why does a mineral ioniser give different results in different homes?
Because the ceramics react with what is already in the water rather than forcing a fixed result. Soft water with few dissolved minerals ends up at a different pH and redox value than hard water from a limestone region. That is why Sanuslife gives pH 9.5 as an upper limit, not a guarantee. A pH test strip before and after filtering tells you where your own tap water lands.
⚠️ Notes: Replace the cartridge after 60 days at the latest, even if 300 litres have not been reached. Medicines should be taken with neutral water (drinking-water quality).
📦 Care: Rinse carafe and lid regularly with clean water. Limescale marks come off with citric acid. The cartridge itself is replaced, not cleaned.
💬 Frequently asked questions
-
How much does a litre cost once the two cartridges are used up?+A single replacement cartridge is €65 in our shop and filters 300 litres, so a little over 20 cents per litre. The 3-pack (€179) brings that to just under 20 cents. The two cartridges in the starter set are already included in the carafe price.
-
Does it remove PFAS or microplastics?+We can only claim what the manufacturer has tested. The Sanuslife table covers heavy metals, chlorine, nitrate, pesticides, PAHs and hormones. PFAS and microplastics are not listed, so we make no promise about them. If PFAS is your main concern, choose a system with published figures for it.
-
Is four months for two cartridges realistic?+At around five litres a day, yes: 300 litres takes roughly 60 days, which is also the time limit for one cartridge. A larger household will reach 300 litres before the timer runs out. In that case the litres decide, not the countdown.
-
How is this different from an electric water ioniser?+An electric ioniser splits water at electrodes into an alkaline and an acidic stream. The carafe changes the water purely through contact with mineral ceramics. It needs no socket and no connection to the mains, but it also has no selectable pH levels. For a kitchen table or an office desk it is the simpler option.
-
Can I use the filtered water for tea and coffee?+Yes. It is still ordinary drinking water, only with less chlorine and a higher pH. Chlorine is easy to taste in a cup of tea, so the difference shows there first. Sanuslife recommends neutral water for taking medicines.
-
What if the timer stops or a flap on the lid breaks?+All three parts are sold separately: the electronic filter indicator, the spout flap and the filling flap. The timer lifts out and clips back in without tools. A small broken part does not turn the whole carafe into waste.
