Pure food-grade citric acid (E330) dissolves limescale gently – the kindest way to descale and clean your ECAIA ionizer, ionizer S or AlkaBest.
Anyone who works with ionized water knows those white streaks. They settle on the device, in carafes and on glasses – that is dissolved limescale, which builds up more strongly during ionization. Left in place, it eventually strains the pump.
This is exactly where citric acid comes in. It binds the calcium carbonate in the scale and turns it into a water-soluble form that simply rinses away. The job gets done thoroughly, yet without harsh chemistry – which is why it is considered the gentlest way to keep an ionizer clean.
The powder is E330 in pure food grade and comes from MIDEFA in South Tyrol, filled in a facility certified to UNI EN ISO 9001:2015. Descale regularly and your device will keep performing for years.
To descale, dissolve the citric acid in water and run your device's descaling cycle as set out in the user manual. For the ECAIA carafe, add a little citric acid to water, let it act for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly. 1 tablespoon equals approx. 10 g.

How does citric acid dissolve limescale?
Limescale is essentially calcium carbonate – a compound that barely dissolves in water. Citric acid reacts with that carbonate and forms readily soluble calcium citrate. The deposit loses its grip and can be rinsed away. Unlike harsh cleaners, the acid works gently and leaves no smell behind.
How often should I descale?
That depends on your water hardness and how much you ionize. The harder your tap water, the more often descaling makes sense. You will find the exact procedure and recommended frequency in your device's user manual and in the manufacturer's descaling video. Doing it regularly prevents clogged pumps and white deposits.
