Description

You want the building block, not the milk around it

Espara Galactose Powder delivers the monosaccharide D-(+)-galactose on its own – a pure powder made from a plant-based starting material.

💎
One single ingredient
D-(+)-galactose and nothing else. No fillers, no flavourings, no colourings, no anti-caking agents.
🌱
A plant starting material instead of milk
Obtained from gum arabic, the dried sap of the acacia tree. No raw material of animal origin.
⚗️
The building block, not the milk sugar
Lactose is a disaccharide of glucose and galactose. Here you get only the galactose half, as a single molecule.
🥄
Gently sweet, barely noticeable
Galactose is only about a third as sweet as table sugar. In tea or muesli you hardly register it.

Milk sugar comes in two halves. That makes dairy the largest everyday source of the second one. Plant foods carry galactose as well – but almost always locked into larger sugar chains, rather than as a free molecule you can stir into a glass.

The free molecule is exactly what sits in this pack. Absorption happens in the small intestine: SGLT1 moves it into the gut cell, GLUT2 passes it on into the bloodstream – the same transporters glucose uses. In the liver the Leloir pathway takes over. Galactokinase attaches a phosphate group, uridyltransferase releases glucose-1-phosphate from it, and epimerase closes the loop.

The manufacturer is Espara GmbH in Salzburg. The substance itself is anything but new on the plate: as a component of lactose it has accompanied human nutrition all along. What differs here is only the route to it – through the plant.

How do you get a simple sugar out of a tree?

Gum arabic is the dried sap of African acacia trees and has long been used in food production as E 414. Chemically it consists largely of arabinogalactan – a heavily branched polysaccharide whose backbone is built mainly from galactose units. Those units can be released from the chain and purified into the single monosaccharide. That yields free galactose with no milk or whey involved at any stage.

What does the "D-(+)" in front of the name mean?

Sugars occur in two mirror-image versions, rather like a left and a right hand. The "D" describes how the atoms are arranged on the second-to-last carbon. The "(+)" states which way the molecule rotates polarised light. Human metabolism works with the D form – the relevant enzymes only fit that one. So the designation is a precise chemical statement, not a marketing flourish.

⚠️ Mandatory information: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet. Do not exceed the stated recommended daily dose.

💬 Frequently asked questions

  • Does the powder contain milk, gluten or fructose?+
No. The product is vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free and fructose-free. The ingredient list holds exactly one entry, and that single substance brings no milk, cereal or fruit-sugar component with it. If you keep dairy or wheat out of your day, there is nothing further to check here.
  • How much powder is one level measuring spoon?+
Roughly 0.8 grams. Six level spoons make up the daily dose of 4.8 grams, split into two servings of three spoons each. Level means the spoon is filled and then scraped flat on top, not heaped. You will not need kitchen scales for it.
  • How does galactose differ from glucose?+
Both are simple sugars with the same molecular formula. They differ only in the spatial arrangement at one single carbon atom – chemists call them C4 epimers. That small difference changes the metabolic route: glucose is processed directly, whereas galactose is converted in the liver first.
  • Can I stir the powder into hot drinks?+
Yes – tea is named explicitly in the intake recommendation. As a crystalline monosaccharide, galactose is stable at normal drinking temperatures and actually dissolves faster in warm liquid than in cold. The pack itself still belongs somewhere dry and protected from heat.
  • Does galactose count as a sugar?+
Yes. Galactose is a simple sugar and is declared as one in nutrition labelling. So "sugar-free" would simply be wrong here. The trade often files it under sugar alternatives anyway – we deliberately stick to the correct classification.
  • Why does a 100 g pack cost more than large bulk bags?+
Small packs always cost more per gram than large ones – filling, packaging and testing spread across fewer grams. The plant-based starting material adds to that. If origin and an ingredient list with exactly one entry matter to you, that is what you are paying for.
