INCENSE – OLIBANUM – The masculine
Its pure, whitish, yellowish color is already a reference to the divine, which is associated with the male. The name Olibanum comes from the Hebrew/Arabic lebona/luban and means something like “purity” or “the divine maker”, the one “who strengthens the divine (in us). This may be an indication that many people still believe that incense has a cleansing effect. Of course, frankincense has antibacterial active ingredients, but we usually find these in all natural resins. Since ancient times, incense has been associated with the male principle, i.e. the divine, and used as a smoke offering in sacred activities in order to offer prayers and wishes to the people of heaven together with the rising smoke. Frankincense has a strengthening effect and strengthens everything that is there that wants to be divinely strengthened. The cleansing effect of incense is probably due to a tradition error. When, in the dark times of the Middle Ages, one epidemic followed the next and hygiene was absolutely catastrophic, the clergy had mercy on the common people: they had incense burners set up in the churches and anyone who wanted was allowed to come to disinfect their clothes . Back then, people had no other way to disinfect. What was overlooked was that a mixture of frankincense and myrrh and probably other germicidal substances were being smoked there. In the incomplete tradition, this may have given rise to the misconception that incense has a cleansing effect.
