Question about item
Going fluoride-free with your toothpaste? Then the rest of the recipe has to pull its weight.
Kräuterhaus Manuka Toothpaste is a full adult toothpaste that simply leaves fluoride out. Manuka honey, chamomile, sage and spearmint do the rest, sweetened with xylitol alone.
Pick up a fluoride-free toothpaste in most shops and you tend to get one of two things: a strawberry-flavoured children's paste, or a tube that barely foams. If you have decided to brush without fluoride as an adult, that is a thin choice.
This formula is built like any other grown-up toothpaste. Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, the first ingredient by weight, and silica do the mechanical cleaning. Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, a mild surfactant, gives the foam. Betaine, glycerin and propylene glycol keep the paste smooth, xanthan gum holds it together.
Because the paste contains water and honey, it needs preserving. Kräuterhaus uses phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid, dehydroacetic acid and o-cymen-5-ol, all approved for cosmetics in the EU. Carvone, limonene, pinene and beta-caryophyllene are not added perfume: they occur naturally in the essential oils used and are marked as such in the ingredient list.

Why spearmint rather than peppermint?
Most toothpastes reach for peppermint oil, which owes its cooling punch to a high menthol content. Spearmint (Mentha spicata, also listed as Mentha viridis) contains far less menthol and gets its flavour mainly from carvone, the mirror-image twin of the molecule that gives caraway its aroma. The result is a rounder, sweeter mint that sits well next to honey and xylitol. Menthol is added separately, so the paste still leaves the mouth feeling fresh. If you find classic mint pastes too harsh, this is the gentler end of the scale.

💬 Frequently asked questions
-
Is it vegan?+No. Real manuka honey (Mel) is an animal product. If you want a vegan paste, the Dental care category lists honey-free alternatives.
-
Does it protect against tooth decay without fluoride?+We make no decay-protection claim for this paste. It cleans mechanically, is sweetened with xylitol and is meant for people who have chosen to brush without fluoride. Whether that choice suits you long term is a question for your dentist.
-
Can children use it?+The tube carries no age restriction and none of the children's warnings found on the fluoride-containing Kräuterhaus toothpastes. Whether a fluoride-free paste is the right choice for your child is best discussed with a paediatric dentist.
-
How does it compare with the Kräuterhaus Propolis Toothpaste?+Both draw on the beehive, but differently. The Propolis paste uses propolis extract and contains fluoride. The Manuka paste uses honey and xylitol and has no fluoride at all. Same brand, same 100 ml tube, different buyer.
-
Does it foam like a normal toothpaste?+Yes, it spreads and foams the way you are used to. It is not one of the foam-free pastes that feel like brushing with cream.
