Description

The flecks in this bar are real dried meadow flowers, and it smells like it

Kräuterhaus Hay Flower Soap is a traditionally boiled vegetable-oil soap with dried hay flowers worked into the bar. It is deliberately superfatted, so it cleans thoroughly without leaving that tight, papery feeling behind.

💧
Superfatted on purpose
More fat goes into the kettle than saponification can use up. The surplus stays in the bar and is left on the skin as you wash. Glycerin, high up the ingredient list, binds moisture on top.
🌼
Hay flowers in the bar, not on the box
The speckles are dried blossom, seed and leaf fragments from meadow grasses and herbs. They give the bar its look and part of its warm, hay-like scent, with coumarin in the perfume doing the rest.
🌿
Made in-house, vegan, made in Germany
Kräuterhaus boils this soap itself rather than buying in blanks. The formula is free from animal-derived ingredients and labelled vegan by the manufacturer.

Bar soap has a reputation problem. It looks lovely on the basin, it lasts for weeks, and then you wash your hands three times in a morning and the skin on your knuckles feels like it has shrunk. Most people who switched back to liquid soap did so for exactly that reason.

The chemistry behind the tight feeling is simple: soap removes fat, including the skin's own. This bar answers that in two ways. The fat surplus from production acts as a built-in conditioner, and glycerin, a natural by-product of soap-making that is often washed out of commercial bars, has been kept in at a high level. What you get is proper cleansing from a real saponified soap (sodium palmate and sodium palm kernelate, not a synthetic detergent bar), with less taken away from the skin.

The scent is where this soap stops being ordinary. Coumarin is the molecule that makes cut hay and woodruff smell the way they do, and here it sits alongside lavender, a touch of clove, Virginia cedarwood and bitter orange peel. The dried hay flowers in the bar carry their own faint version of the same note. The result is warm and slightly herbal rather than sweet or floral.

Why does the ingredient list run to nearly thirty items?

Blame the label rules, not the recipe. Since 31 July 2026, cosmetics placed on the EU market must list around 80 fragrance allergens individually instead of the previous 26 (Regulation (EU) 2023/1545). Natural oils such as lavender and clove, and single components such as pinene or camphor, now appear by name behind "Parfum". The soap itself has not become more complicated. If you know which fragrance component you react to, you can now check for it directly.

⚠️ Notes: Cosmetic product for external use. Contains declarable fragrance allergens (see INCI).

📦 Storage: No special storage requirements from the manufacturer. Like any boiled soap, the bar goes further if it can dry out between uses.

💬 Frequently asked questions

  • Will it leave my hands feeling tight like other bar soaps?+
That tightness comes from soap stripping too much of the skin's own fat. Here, a fat surplus is left in the bar during production and part of it stays on the skin when you wash. Together with the glycerin, the skin feels cared for after rinsing rather than dried out.
  • What exactly are "hay flowers"?+
Not a single plant. Hay flowers (German: Heublumen) are the fine mix of blossoms, seeds and leaf fragments left over when meadow hay is made. In the Alps they are best known from the traditional hay sack and hay baths of the Kneipp tradition. In this soap they do a simpler job: they give the bar its appearance and part of its scent.
  • How strong is the scent, and does it linger?+
Clearly noticeable while you wash, subtle afterwards. It reads as fresh hay with lavender and a hint of clove and cedar, not as a sweet perfume. It does not compete with a fragrance you might wear.
  • I react to fragrances. Should I avoid this soap?+
This is a scented soap with perfume oils and plant material, so it is not the right choice if you need fragrance-free cleansing. Every declarable fragrance allergen is listed individually in the INCI. Compare the list with what you know you react to before buying.
  • Why does the pack say "fresh weight"?+
The 100 g is the weight straight after production. A boiled soap loses water as it sits, so the bar becomes a little lighter but also harder and slower to wear down. A draining soap dish keeps it that way between uses.
