Question about item
Light the charcoal, not your fingertips
A pair of bamboo tongs is the simplest way to hold a charcoal tablet in the flame until it catches, then lay it straight into the burner.
Most people try it once by hand: lighter in one hand, charcoal tablet pinched between two fingers of the other. The lighter gets hot, the coal starts to spit, and in the moment you let go it often lands next to the bowl rather than in it.
Tongs turn that into a calm routine. Grip the tablet at its edge, hold it into the side of the flame and keep your other hand free for the lighter. Nothing more is needed to get started.
Hold the charcoal with the tongs and carefully light it over a flame. As soon as it sparks, place it on the sand in a heatproof incense burner and let it glow through for about 15 minutes, until the surface is covered with a layer of white ash.

Why not simply light the charcoal on the sand?
Self-lighting charcoal catches from the edge, and it needs the flame right there for a few seconds. Lying flat on sand, the tablet is hard to reach from the side, and the lighter ends up tilted with your thumb above the flame. Holding the coal up in the air with tongs gives the flame free access all round, so it catches faster and more evenly.
⚠️ Notes: Only hold charcoal to the flame using tongs. Please handle hot charcoal with care.
📦 Storage: Do not leave the bamboo tongs lying right next to the glowing charcoal in the burner, as they could char.
💬 Frequently asked questions
-
Do I need tongs for incense sticks or a tea-light burner?+No. Sticks are lit directly, and with a tea-light burner the incense rests on a mesh above the candle. The tongs are made for burning on charcoal.
-
Bamboo or metal: which is better?+For lighting a tablet at home, bamboo does the job and stays comfortable to hold. Metal lasts longer and suits large pieces of charcoal or an outdoor fire bowl, but it gets warm and is noticeably heavier.
-
Can I use the tongs to clear burnt resin off the coal?+They are good for moving or turning the coal, less so for scraping. Burnt residue is easier to push off with an incense spoon or a wooden stick and bury in the sand.
-
The tip has turned dark. Is that a problem?+Slight darkening near the tip is normal for bamboo used close to a flame. Once the wood cracks or no longer grips the tablet firmly, it is time for a new pair.
