North of the 40th parallel, which includes all of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, the sun sits too low from October to April for skin to produce meaningful amounts of vitamin D. Most people know this vaguely. Far fewer know how to read the number on their lab report, whether 800 IU or 5,000 IU is the sensible daily amount, or why one product lists micrograms and the next international units. This book is written for exactly that gap: short enough to read in an evening, precise enough to keep on the shelf.

The eight chapters move from biology (why vitamin D behaves more like a hormone than a vitamin) through history, deficiency, causes, measurement, replenishment and choosing a preparation, finishing with the ten questions patients ask most often. Along the way the authors offer practical tools you will not find in every guide: the shadow rule for judging whether the sun is strong enough, a worked calculation of what 5,000 IU would mean in food (500 g wild salmon, 125 eggs or 166 litres of milk a day), a diagram of where magnesium is consumed in the activation pathway, and a discussion of the 2014 Veugelers and Ekwaru paper on which they base their view that official reference values are set too low. Case stories from their own practice, such as Sabine with prediabetes and fatigue or Klaus and his fear of overdosing, keep the numbers human. The Wunderleicht series ("Wunderleicht Fasten", "Wunderleicht Leberreinigung", "Wunderleicht Ketogen Essen") is their established brand; this is the first title devoted to a single nutrient.

Is it worth it if my German is only intermediate?

Probably yes. The authors write in plain, short sentences for lay readers, and every key idea is backed by a diagram, a table or a numbered list. The traffic-light chart, the activation pathway and the food calculations work almost without text. Technical terms are explained where they first appear, and the index at the back helps you jump to a topic. If you are buying it as a gift for a German-speaking friend or relative who keeps asking "how much vitamin D should I take?", the question of language does not arise at all.

⚠️ Please note: Non-fiction book in German. The content reflects the professional opinion of the authors and does not replace medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Dosage figures in the book describe the authors' practice and sit above official reference values; any supplementation should be agreed individually with a qualified professional.
