Cajeput essential oil, menthol and camphor give the massage a crisp, clean sensation and a clear, resinous scent. There is no chilli or capsaicin in the formula.

Vegan formula from Salzburg
The manufacturer declares the cream vegan. It complies with the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and is also stocked by Austrian pharmacies (PZN 3437358).

Frankincense has a long history in India's Ayurvedic tradition, while arnica, calendula and nettle belong to Europe's herbal heritage. This cream brings both together alongside sea buckthorn, horsetail and three plant oils (soya, sunflower and black cumin). The result is a water-based cream that spreads easily and is worked in until absorbed.

Which frankincense is it, and does the species matter?
There are several frankincense trees. Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) and the African Boswellia carterii are the two most often found in creams and balms, and product pages do not always say which one they use. This cream names it clearly: a resin extract from the Indian species. If you compare frankincense creams, the Latin name on the INCI list is the quickest way to know what you are buying.

Is it a cream or an ointment?+
A cream. Water comes first on the INCI list, followed by light oils and emulsifiers, so it feels lighter than a fatty ointment or balm. The plant extracts sit further down because they are used in small amounts.

I'm sensitive to plants in the daisy family. Anything to watch out for?+
Yes. Arnica and calendula both belong to the daisy family (Asteraceae) and both are in this cream. The fragrance components limonene and linalool are listed too. If you react to any of these, check the full INCI list before buying.

Is this natural cosmetics?+
No, and we would rather tell you up front. It carries no natural-cosmetics seal and uses conventional emulsifiers plus the preservatives phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, which keep a water-based cream stable in the tube. It is, however, vegan.

Why is there black cumin oil in a frankincense cream?+
It is one of three plant oils in the formula, next to soya and sunflower oil. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) runs through Espara's range, and you will also find it as capsules in our shop.
