For anyone who wants to know more about turmeric, ginkgo or selenium than the label tells them

Across three hardcover volumes and almost 3,000 pages, Codex Humanus brings together what Thomas Chrobok has compiled on natural substances from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, indigenous healing traditions and orthomolecular medicine. A reference work to dip into as needed, not one to finish in a single weekend.
Anyone who has looked into natural substances for a while knows the puzzle: an article on OPC here, a talk on vitamin D there, plus study quotes without a source. At some point the common thread is lost. And the question remains how centuries of experience and today's laboratory research fit together.
The Codex puts this knowledge in order. Volume I lays the foundations: what orthomolecular substances are, why the nutrient content of our food is declining, how vital substances interact with one another. It is followed by topic chapters in which tables show which substances the author assigns to which subject area. Volumes II and III give each natural substance its own chapter, covering its origin, traditional use and the research situation from the author's point of view.
Thomas Chrobok is both author and publisher. The first edition appeared in 2013, with new editions following in 2016 and 2020. He writes with strong opinions and is openly critical of the pharmaceutical industry and conventional medicine. The publisher itself points out that many statements on effectiveness rely on studies that are not officially regarded as evidence-based. So read the Codex as a collection of knowledge and food for thought, not as treatment instructions.

A look inside: how is a chapter structured?
The chapters on natural substances usually open with a quotation and the question of where the substance comes from and how it was traditionally used. The author then explains terms and biochemical background in everyday language. The main part consists of studies and statements by doctors and researchers, referenced in footnotes. The index at the end of Volume III helps you find any substance again quickly.
Who is the Codex for?
For readers who want to understand natural medicine and food supplements rather than just use them, and who enjoy researching further on their own. Anyone looking for a neutral account backed by conventional medicine will be less happy with the author's critical tone. The work is deliberately intended as a complement to medical advice.
⚠️ Please note: The contents of this book are for information and general education. They do not replace advice, diagnosis or treatment by a doctor or pharmacist. Many statements on effectiveness in the book are based on studies and experience that are not officially recognised as evidence-based. The book is available in German only.
