Question about item
One tool for lighting up and tidying up: tongs at one end, a brush at the other
The 15 cm bamboo tongs hold the charcoal while it catches. Turn them round afterwards and the fanned-out end sweeps up ash and stray sand.
A lot of care often goes into an incense corner: a good bowl, a feather, a shelf of blends. Then the charcoal gets lit with whatever is in the kitchen drawer, barbecue tongs or a pair of tweezers. That is usually the moment the calm goes, before any scent has even risen.
A tool made for the job changes that. It is small enough for a tablet a few centimetres across and light in the hand. Being bamboo, it looks at home next to the bowl rather than like something borrowed from the cooker.
Indigo Enterprises, the Viennese incense workshop founded in 1991, describes the tongs as an essential aid for anyone who values incense tools that are both practical and good to look at.
Hold the charcoal with the tongs and carefully light it over a flame. Once it sparks, lay it on the sand in a heatproof burner. Add your incense only after about 15 minutes, when the surface of the coal has turned white. After the session, turn the tool round and sweep with the fibre end.

⚠️ Notes: Only hold charcoal to the flame using the tongs. Please handle hot charcoal with care.
📦 Storage: Do not leave the tongs lying right next to glowing charcoal in the burner, as the bamboo could char.
💬 Frequently asked questions
-
Will kitchen tongs do the same job?+They can. Most kitchen or barbecue tongs are made for far bigger things than a charcoal tablet, though, and metal ones warm up quickly in the flame. These are smaller, lighter and come with a brush at the other end.
-
How long does the charcoal glow once it is lit?+A 3 cm tablet glows for about an hour, a 4 cm tablet for about an hour and a half. One is usually enough for a whole session.
-
Should I air the room afterwards?+As needed. Indigo recommends airing thoroughly after a cleansing session. If there is a smoke alarm in the room, check how sensitive it is before you start.
-
Can I use the brush end on the sand in the bowl?+Yes. Indigo names exactly that as the brush's job: cleaning the sand, the burner and the surface. Wait until the coal has burnt out and cooled, then sweep residue aside and smooth the sand for next time.
