Inside the plant-based, gastro-resistant capsule sits a blend of 15 different bacterial strains — lactobacilli traditionally associated with the small intestine, bifidobacteria with the colon. Alongside them: acacia fibre powder (gum arabic), a water-soluble fibre from the resin of the acacia tree that human digestive enzymes cannot break down and that is fermented further along the gut by the resident microbiota.

Anatis has been producing in Mogersdorf in southern Burgenland for decades and encapsulates by hand — no magnesium stearate as a flow agent, no titanium dioxide as a colourant. The Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS®-1 in the blend is supplied by UAS Laboratories in Wisconsin, USA, and is one of the most thoroughly documented Lactobacillus strains worldwide; in-vitro studies show its resistance to gastric acid and bile salts in digestion-simulation models.

Why a gastro-resistant casing?

Viable bacterial cultures are sensitive to heat and acid. The capsule shell is made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and is designed to dissolve further along the digestive tract — so the contents are protected from the acidic environment of the stomach. The shell is plant-based and contains no gelatine, which makes the product suitable for vegan diets.

What does the acacia fibre do here?

Acacia fibre — also known as gum arabic — comes from the resin of the acacia tree and consists of arabinogalactans, long-chain soluble polysaccharides. Human digestive enzymes cannot break them down; they are fermented further along the gut by the resident microbiota. In nutritional research, acacia fibre is described as well tolerated — it binds water without becoming strongly viscous and is counted among the more slowly fermentable soluble fibres.
