What is Zechstein?
Zechstein refers to a geological formation that originated around 250 million years ago during the Permian period. At that time, the so-called Zechstein Sea existed – a vast, now long-dried-up inland sea that stretched from northern England across Germany to Russia. As the Zechstein Sea evaporated, the minerals contained in the water, such as magnesium and salt, were deposited in several clearly defined layers in the ground. These deposits are known today as Zechstein salts or Zechstein strata. These mineral-rich layers are found and mined particularly in the Netherlands, Germany, and the North Sea region.

Why is this important for magnesium products?
Zechstein salt is considered extremely pure because it remains hidden at a depth of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 meters beneath the earth and rock, protected from modern environmental influences.
