Sodium bicarbonate is a sodium salt of carbonic acid and belongs to the bicarbonate family. This compound should not be confused with sodium carbonate (soda, molecular formula Na2CO3). The outdated and chemically inaccurate common names sodium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate are occasionally used for sodium bicarbonate. The compound is also sold commercially under the names baking soda, baking soda, baking soda, and under the brand names Bullrich Salt and Kaiser Natron. Sodium bicarbonate is a colorless, crystalline solid that decomposes above 50°C, releasing water and carbon dioxide, to form sodium carbonate.
