Suar wood from the rain tree
Suar (Samanea saman) is the carving wood of Bali and Java: dark, richly grained heartwood that takes a smooth polish. Body and head are left natural; the wings and the small heart are brushed with white.

Four steps, all by hand
Carved, sun-dried, polished, painted. Grain, tone and brushwork differ from angel to angel. Yours will look like the photo, never identical to it.
A colleague is off on long-term leave, a friend has just moved abroad, a neighbour has had a rough year. A card feels thin and a big present feels wrong. What works is something small enough to sit on a bedside table and quiet enough not to need a caption. The Peace angel is the calmest of the five Hati-Hati designs: an upright, simple figure with a pale heart at its chest, 15 cm tall and about 100 g, so it travels in a padded envelope and fits next to a bunch of flowers or a book.
The angels are made by craftspeople in Indonesia's mountain villages and brought to Europe by the giftware house Ancient Wisdom, in five sentiments (Love, Joy, Peace, Friendship, Guardian) and three sizes. At Viterna you will find the Peace angel in 15 cm and the Love angel in 25 cm.

Will mine look exactly like the picture?+
Close, but not identical. Suar shows lighter and darker zones depending on the tree and the section of trunk, and the white on the wings is applied with a brush. Shape and size stay the same; the figure of the wood does not. The photo shows a typical piece.

Is it a religious figure?+
Not as such. There is no cross, halo or inscription; it is a guardian-and-good-wishes figure of the kind found in many cultures. Anyone religious can read it that way, anyone else sees a plain wooden angel with a kind thought behind it. That is why it works for sympathy gifts, housewarmings and get-well parcels alike.

Does it hang or stand?+
It stands. The base is roughly 5 × 2 cm, enough for a shelf, windowsill or desk, and there is no hanging loop. If you want to hang it, you would need to add a small cord yourself.

Peace 15 cm or Love 25 cm: which one?+
Same series, same wood, same painting style. The Love angel is 25 cm and about 150 g, a piece for a sideboard or mantelpiece. The Peace angel at 15 cm is the compact one: for posting, for a bedside table, or as an add-on to another gift. Choose by sentiment first, then by where it will stand.
