Cosmetics, natural cosmetics, organic cosmetics: what the terms mean

The three words sound similar, but they are not regulated in the same way.

Cosmetics
Any product for caring for and cleaning skin, hair, nails, lips and teeth. In the EU, the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 governs safety, labelling and the ingredient list. This applies to every product in this category.
Natural cosmetics
Not defined by law. What counts as natural cosmetics is set by private seals such as NATRUE or COSMOS NATURAL: for example natural raw materials, permitted processing and avoiding certain synthetic substances.
Organic cosmetics
Not regulated by law either. Seals such as COSMOS ORGANIC or NATRUE at organic level define how high the share of ingredients from certified organic farming must be.
Good to know: Whether a product carries a seal is shown on the packaging and on the product page. A seal assesses raw materials and production.

Brands in our range

Reading ingredients: how to understand the INCI list

Every cosmetics package lists its ingredients using the international INCI system. Four rules make it easier to read.

✓
Order by quantity
The ingredient with the largest share comes first. Ingredients below 1% may be listed at the end in any order.
✓
Aqua means water
If Aqua comes first, the product is a water-based cream or lotion. Ointments and balms often start with an oil or wax.
✓
Plants in Latin
Plant ingredients are listed by their botanical name, for example Calendula officinalis for marigold or Butyrospermum parkii for shea butter.
✓
Fragrances named individually
Certain fragrance ingredients such as Limonene, Linalool or Citral must be listed individually above a small amount. This helps anyone who reacts to specific fragrances.

Three myths that refuse to go away

Myth 1
"Natural automatically means well tolerated."
Fact: Plant extracts and essential oils can also irritate the skin or trigger allergies. That is why fragrance allergens appear in the ingredient list.
Myth 2
"Preservatives have no place in good cosmetics."
Fact: Water-based creams need protection against germs, otherwise they spoil quickly. The EU Cosmetics Regulation sets out which substances and amounts are permitted.
Myth 3
"Natural cosmetics is a protected term."
Fact: The term is not defined by law. Binding rules only apply where a seal such as NATRUE or COSMOS has been awarded.

Using products safely

✓
Test on a small area first
Apply new products to the inside of your elbow first and wait a day, especially if your skin is sensitive.
✓
Check the shelf life after opening
The open-jar symbol with a number and M (for example 12 M) shows how many months the product can be used after opening.
✓
Protect eyes and mucous membranes
Keep creams, gels and oils away from the eyes. If anything gets in, rinse with clear water.
✓
Read the directions on the pack
Amount, frequency and notes are listed on every product page. For babies, only use products intended for babies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cosmetics and natural cosmetics?+
Cosmetics is the umbrella term for all care and cleansing products and is regulated in the EU by the Cosmetics Regulation. Natural cosmetics is not defined by law. Binding criteria are set by private seals such as NATRUE or COSMOS.
How do I recognise certified natural cosmetics?+
By the seal on the packaging, for example NATRUE, COSMOS NATURAL or COSMOS ORGANIC. Whether a product carries a seal is also shown on its product page.
How long do cosmetics keep?+
The open-jar symbol on the packaging shows how many months a product can be used after opening. Unopened products with a shelf life of less than 30 months carry a best-before date.
Are the cosmetics vegan?+
That depends on the product. Some products contain beeswax, honey or lanolin, for example. Vegan products are marked on the product page.
What does INCI mean?+
INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. It is the standard system used to list the ingredients on every cosmetics package in the EU.
Can I order cosmetics in Austria?+
Yes. Viterna ships from Eibiswald in Styria to Austria and Germany. You can find the current shipping costs on the Payment & dispatch page.
