Anyone buying Ayurvedic herbs knows the dilemma: powder or extract, organic or conventional, India or "somewhere in Asia". Brahmi has been a central plant in Vedic herbal tradition for millennia – which is exactly why the quality range on the market is enormous.

Himalaya takes both routes at once. Each caplet contains 500 mg of whole-plant powder – Bacopa as a full herb with all its secondary metabolites – plus 250 mg of concentrated dry extract from the same plant. The principal compounds in Bacopa monnieri are triterpenoid saponins known as bacosides. Alongside these, the plant contains alkaloids, flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin, and phytosterols.

Brahmi has been described in Ayurvedic tradition for over 2,000 years – including in the Charaka Samhita, one of the oldest medical texts of India. The Sanskrit name "Brahmi" derives from Brahma, the creator deity, and carries connotations of the sacred. Himalaya cultivates the plant organically in India and processes it to cGMP standards. EU-organic certification by BIOAGRICERT (Reg. V401) makes the cultivation verifiable for the European market.

Why combine Bacopa powder and Bacopa dry extract in one caplet?

Powder and extract deliver different profiles of the same plant. Whole-plant powder contains the natural breadth of secondary metabolites – bacosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, phytosterols – in the proportions found in the plant itself. The dry extract concentrates the water-soluble fractions in a denser form. Pairing both is a classical strategy in modern Ayurvedic processing: full spectrum and concentration in a single product.

How is Bacopa classified in Ayurvedic tradition?

The Charaka Samhita – a key text of Ayurvedic tradition from antiquity – classifies Brahmi within the group of Medhya Rasayanas. This is a traditional plant grouping within Vedic culture. The classification belongs to India's documented plant heritage and describes the historical use of the herb.

💬 Frequently asked questions

  • What exactly is Brahmi / Bacopa monnieri?+
Bacopa monnieri is a low-growing creeping wetland plant of the Plantaginaceae family, found in marshy areas across India, Australia, Asia and Africa. In English it is also called water hyssop or herb of grace. In Ayurvedic tradition it carries the Sanskrit name "Brahmi" and has been described for over 2,000 years – including in the Charaka Samhita from the 6th century AD.
  • How do I take the caplets?+
Adults take one caplet daily with a meal. Taking it with food supports tolerability, since Bacopa is traditionally described as a "warming" herb. Picking a fixed time of day makes it easier to stay consistent.
  • How long does one pack last?+
One pack contains 60 caplets. At one caplet per day, that works out to a 2-month supply. For anyone who follows the traditional Ayurvedic pattern of multi-week cycles, a single pack covers a full two-month rhythm.
  • Is it vegan and allergen-friendly?+
Yes. Himalaya Organic Bacopa contains no ingredients of animal origin and is suitable for a vegan diet. The product is free from wheat, corn, soy and dairy. Manufacture follows cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) standards.
  • What does the EU organic seal on the box mean?+
Organic certification under EC 834/07 and EC 889/08 is carried out by BIOAGRICERT (Reg. V401). The code IN-BIO-132 identifies an Indian certifying body, and the addition "Non-EU Agriculture" indicates that the plants are grown outside the EU – namely in India. Even so, EU organic standards apply to the entire cultivation and processing chain.
  • Which Himalaya products go well alongside Bacopa?+
In the Ayurvedic household tradition, herbs are often combined complementarily. Popular companions from the Himalaya range are Himalaya Organic Triphala (the classic three-fruit formulation) and Himalaya Septilin (a multi-plant formulation). A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can advise on combinations for individual situations.
