Iron is an essential trace element for almost all living beings. In the body of humans and animals it is considered iron (ii) and iron (iii). As the central atom of heme in hemoglobin and Myoglobin and in cytochrome, it is responsible for the O2 transport and storage and the electron transmission of many animals and humans. Furthermore, iron is part of Fe-sulfur complexes in many enzymes, e.g. Nitrogenasen or the complex of the respiratory chain. The third important class of iron enzymes are the so-called non-heme iron compounds, for example the methane Monooxygenase, ribonucleotide-reductase and the hemerythrin. These proteins carry out various tasks: oxygen activation, oxygen transport, redox and hydrolysis. A vital ingredient is three-grade iron as central in the enzyme catalanse, which in the peroxisomes of the cells reduces the cell hydrogen peroxide in the metabolism.
